Complications during childbirth

Unfortunately, although childbirth is a natural process, there is always a risk of sudden and unexpected complications.

If the contractions are artificially caused by hormones or the amniotic sac ruptures without waiting for it to start naturally, this is referred to as induction of labour.

Labor induction is especially useful when the mother and baby benefit from not waiting for labor to start on its own.

Child's position and stance

In 90% of cases, up to the 36th week of pregnancy, babies turn so that they come to lie first with their head back and the back of their head on the mother's stomach. However, some babies do not turn into this optimal birth position and are born as a so-called "star watcher" or in a seated position with their feet or buttocks first. In the rare cases where the fetus remains lying in a transverse position until birth, it is delivered by caesarean section.

When things are not going well

Impaired labor occurs when contractions are too short, too weak, or infrequent. This often happens when a woman is tired, but a full bladder can also cause the uterus to stop contracting. At worst, the birth stops.

Birth falls

Premature labor or so-called sudden birth occurs rarely, and if it does, most often it occurs in women who have already given birth once. This labor lasts less than two hours from the first contraction - which in some cases equals an urgent contraction - until the birth of the baby.

By the way, in forensic medicine, the term autumn birth describes the situation when a child falls directly from the mother's birth canal and injures himself.

The placenta supplies your baby with blood through the umbilical cord and thus all vital nutrients. That is why the placenta is well supplied with blood and during pregnancy is firmly attached to the inner wall of the uterus. If you separate after giving birth, there will be a large bleeding wound area.

For this reason, bleeding that occurs during or after childbirth often has something to do with the placenta.

When the child is not well

Your baby's condition during birth can be determined to a certain extent by CTG. This not only measures contractions, but also the baby's heart rate. For example, if this drops suddenly and does not recover, this may indicate that the baby is not doing well and should be born as soon as possible. Forceps and a suction cup are useful when the baby has to be taken out of the birth canal. This is often the case when the mother is so tired that she can no longer push enough. But also if the baby is not healthy but has already slipped too deep into the pelvis to be brought into the world through a caesarean section.

During vaginal delivery, injuries can occur. In addition to the general feeling of "soreness", which is often caused by small fiber tears, they are well known and frightening. Approximately 10% of women who give birth tear the tissue between the vagina and the anus during childbirth.

A risky pregnancy equals a risky birth?

Depending on the risks associated with your pregnancy, your doctor will plan to deliver with you at an early stage. You may have received more intensive care and monitoring during your pregnancy.

In many cases, labor is induced before the due date because both the mother and the baby are likely to benefit at this point if the baby is born.
